Who we are

Apollo Tires is a tire manufacturer of Indian origin. Apollo is an ambitious and growing company with factoris in India and Europe, as well as sales offices around the world. About 160 employees work at Global R&D in Enschede to develop new (car) tires for Apollo and Vredestein. There is also an office in Frankfurt (Raunheim) with approximately 25 employees.

The body compound development group of the Materials team is responsible for the design, development and industrialization of non-tread compounds. With it’s broad portfolio, the body compounds play a crucial role in determining the stability, durability, comfort, load carrying capacity and aesthetics of a tyre.

Objective or the assignment

Carbon black is traditionally used as a reinforcing filler by rubber industry. Despite its excellent mechanical strength, processability, thermal conductivity & the cost benefits, the carbon black lags in rolling resistance, a measure of the fuel efficiency. This is believed to be due to the high network structure of carbon black with high filler-filler interaction which in turn generates heat through internal friction. To improve this, several coupling agents for the carbon black are developed by the suppliers. However, there is very limited know-how on the application of this technology. The aim of this study is to understand coupling mechanism of selected coupling agent with different carbon black types and to arrive at an empirical solution for the amount of coupling agent (phf) required.
